Come to the Pomperaug High School auditorium on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of May for a classic American musical comedy. Cole Porter’s Anything Goes will be performed by Pomperaug High School students, actors, singers, dancers, and musicians, under the direction of Mr. Paul E. Doniger. The vocalists are under the leadership of Mr. Christian Banach, the dancers under Ms. Nicole Antosh, and the orchestra under the direction of Mr. Robert D’Angelo. Anything Goes, a show that might be easily re-titled The Best of Cole Porter, was first performed in 1934 and has been a perennial favorite ever since. PHS will be staging the show with the additional songs and changes from its 1962 revival.
This typically light-hearted story follows the customary boy-chases-girl plot of the traditional musical comedy; this time the chase occurs on board an ocean liner bound for England from New York City. Among the colorful characters on board are our hero, the young and cocky Billy Crocker; Billy’s nearsighted boss, Elisha J. Whitney; the loveable gangster, Moonface Martin, who aspires to move up from Public Enemy #13 to the coveted #12 slot; Martin’s dancing and singing “moll,” Bonnie; a rather dull-witted (but also loveable) English Lord, Sir Evelyn Oakleigh, who is engaged to the hero’s sweetheart (Hope Harcourt); Hope’s snobby and ambitious mother; and the unforgettable Reno Sweeney, a former Evangelist turned nightclub singer – complete with her backup singing group of four “Angels” (Charity, Chastity, Purity, and Virtue). The songs include such Cole Porter favorites as “Friendship,” “It’s Delovely,” “Let’s Misbehave,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” and of course the title song, “Anything Goes.”
The cast of over 40 PHS students will include Emily Colt as Reno, Kate Bischoff as Hope, Lindsay Dzubay as Bonnie, R. J. Stevens as Billy, and Dom Narducci as Moonface Martin. Olivia Carr is serving as Mr. Doniger’s assistant director and Kt Ryan returns as stage manager for this production.
Anything Goes, Mr. Doniger’s first musical at PHS, will be presented with one intermission of approximately 15 minutes. The play will run for about two hours. On Friday and Saturday the 4th and 5th, the show will start at 7:30pm and on Sunday the 6th at 2:30pm. Tickets will be on sale in April @ $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for students and senior citizens. Come and enjoy this classic musical comedy. We hope to see you there!

The Pomperaug Theatre Company (PHS) has returned from the 71st Annual Spring Festival of the Connecticut Drama Association, held at E. O. Smith High School in Storrs, where we performed our reduced version of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” PHS used to be very involved in the CDA, and director Paul Doniger said that he is “thrilled that we are rekindling that involvement.”
In the award category, we came home with three honorable mentions for acting: Seniors Ian Johnson and Patricia Doolin (Ferdinand and Miranda) and junior Olivia Carr (Trinculo) were the winners. We also received a special recommendation for “Magical Movement” from the adjudicators.
Finally, please congratulate our very gifted senior Adrienne Camm, who played Ariel, for being one of the five winners of the award for “Outstanding Achievement in Acting.” Those of you who saw our full length production last November know how much she deserves that prize.
The event included 11 schools from all over the state, each performing a 55 minute piece (expanded from the usual 45 minute limit), covering a very varied selection of plays. The competition was strong, but everyone was warm, sharing, and friendly. This is one of the nicest events I have been privileged to attend, and I look forward to bringing us back again next year. I also wish to extend a grateful and warm thank you to Kathy Wadyka for her assistance as chaperone and to the parents of sophomore Amber Manz (crew) for their generous and much needed assistance in transporting the set, props, and costumes, and with taking care of the 19 students who attended. Lastly, kudos go the small, but dedicated crew and the other performers for their focused and energetic efforts — with a special pat on the back to our dynamo of a stage manager, sophomore Kt Ryan.
