From Our Principal
September 2008
Welcome from the PHS Principal!
I wanted to take a moment to welcome staff and students back to the 2008-09
school year. As the new Principal, I am honored and excited to begin my
journey at PHS. This year promises to be a rewarding one for all, and
students have already begun to focus on their academic studies, sports,
and extra-curricular activities. Soon PHS clubs will open their doors
to new members, sports teams will face their competitors with pride, and
students will invest time and effort in becoming independent, successful
learners.
My vision for Pomperaug High School considers ongoing improvements in
three essential areas: curriculum, communication, and school culture.
The 21st Century has increased both the intellectual and technological
demands necessary for student success. Prior to the opening of school,
staff members worked in collaborative teams to integrate strategies for
improving students’ skills in critical literacy. Today, more than
ever, students are expected to meet high standards in communication and
critical thinking. Whether students are reading, writing, listening, speaking
or viewing, the ability to use both critical and creative thinking is
essential for lifelong learning. This includes students’ ability
to collaborative with one another, solve problems, and utilize technology
as a means of gathering, evaluating, and communicating information relevant
to real-world concepts.
One of the most important goals this year, however, is to develop and
sustain a positive school environment that fosters in students a sense
of belonging. With over 1400 students, it is important that students have
a voice. We are looking forward to developing new programs that will appeal
to student interests and help them make connections to the school community-at-large.
I look forward to working with each of you throughout the 2008-09 school
year…and beyond!
