Real Estate

Where do you want to live, and how will you afford it?

Day 1:

Open the Day One worksheet.  You will need to fill out information on this sheet - you should print it OR save it and fill it in as you go.  You will be exploring PLACES/COMMUNITIES where you might want to buy a house.  You will need this information before beginning Day 2.  Do not worry about specific houses - you will do that as part of Day 2.

Day 2:

Refer to the communities you found in Day 1.  Today you will be actually choosing houses.  Look at www.realtor.com and be sure to thoroughly investigate each house and write the MLS number so that you can reference that for tomorrow.  Open Day Two worksheet and print it OR save it to your H drive and fill it in from there.

Day 3:

You will need a calculator today as well as the MLS ID numbers from your 3 houses from day 2.  Open the Day 3 worksheet and print it to fill in OR fill it in online and save to your H drive.

Day 4: Renting Your First Apartment

Introduction
Congratulations!  You have finally graduated and landed your first job.  Now you want to move out of your parent's house and get a place of your own.  Freedom at last!  However, this can be a very time consuming process.  This project will help you organize all of the information needed to make a wise decision.

The Task
As an educated consumer you are going to research your options of renting an apartment versus owning a single family home or townhouse.  You will need to use a budget to determine how much you can afford in rent.

The Process
The first thing you will need to do is take a look at your budget.  Determine how much money you have to spend on an apartment.  Don't forget to include money for your savings.  Make any adjustments you feel are necessary.  For example, you may want to cut back on entertainment so you can afford your apartment.  Print out your budget, make the adjustments and hand in to your teacher for approval.

  • It's time to look for your first apartment.  Make a list of the things that you find important in an apartment.  Keep in mind that many things, such as fireplaces and balconies, will add to the cost of the apartment.

  • Use the Internet to find three one-bedroom apartments at different apartment complexes.  Print out and fill in the tables to help you to compare your choices.
